Originally an autumn harvest festival of thanksgiving, this holiday, known as the Festival of Tabernacles or Feast of Booths, commemorates the period of wandering in the Sinai, Desert, when the Israelites lived in booths (sukkot). Meals are eaten in the sukkah, weather permitting.
