Exotic Fruits

  • About
An increasing number of unusual fruits (some tropical) can regularly be found in Western markets. Most have a short shelf-life, which is probably the reason why they have previously been rare outside their growing region.
The feijoa, or pineapple guava, is a small oval fruit native to southern Brazil but now grown in New Zealand, California and Australia. Slightly gritty in texture like the guava, the feijoa is green and shiny, with heavily scented flesh surrounding a seed cavity. It is good plain, sliced for salads or puréed as a base for desserts. The peel should be removed as it can be bitter.
