A conservative, predominantly Hindu state in northern India, located between the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bengal. Bihar has very fertile farmland and relatively dense population; its capital is Patna. Recently the southern, much more mountainous half of the state was separated off to create a new state called Jharkhand.
