A people who form the majority population of Sri Lanka, and their language. The Sinhalese capital was at Kandy when the island of Sri Lanka (then known to Europeans as Ceylon) was conquered and colonized. Most Sinhalese are Buddhist; the Tamil population on the island is largely Hindu.
