1 In the top tier are wines from a controlled region (or appellation). The use of this appellation is legally controlled, and stipulates:
- Which grape varieties may be grown.
- How big a crop may be taken.
- How the wine must be made and matured.
There are over 400 wines classified according to Appellation Contrôlée in France. Other countries in the EU use similar systems.
