Lactarius pterosporus Romagn. (illustrated 50% life size) Very similar to L. azonites (above), differing as detailed here, mainly in the spores. Cap fawn, discolouring reddish with age or bruising; usually distinctly wrinkled. Gills are more crowded than in L. azonites. Milk markedly hot. Spores 7–8×6.5–7¼; ornamented by wings up to 2¼ high, together with a few small isolated warts, no connecting thin ridges between the wings. Habitat with oak, beech or hornbeam; late summer to autumn. Uncommon. Unknown edibility.
