Mottled Bolete Leccinum variicolor Watling (illustrated 30% life size) Cap 5–10cm across; stippled mouse-grey to dark brown; initially felty and dry, later smooth and slightly viscid. Stem 125–180×20–25mm; white with mouse-grey scales, bruising greenish-yellow on handling. Flesh pink in the cap, intensely blue-green in stem base; taste and smell pleasant. Tubes white or pale cream. Pores small, colouring similar to tubes, bruising pink or vinaceous. Spores 14–20×5–6¼, subfusiform. Spore print walnut-brown with cinnamon flush. Habitat with birch; summer to autumn. Frequent. Edible.
