  • About

Cousin to turmeric, mango ginger (Curcuma amada) is also a member of the ginger family Its growing habit resembles that of turmeric, with shorter sections branching off longer, thicker ones. Green (unripe) mango and mango ginger smell so much alike that it’s obvious how the plant got its popular name. Parsis view this as a medicinal plant with powerful anti-inflammatory properties, both internally and externally. I’ve even seen some European homeopathic arthritis remedies featuring extract of Curcuma amada. It sometimes appears as a pickle, which is a good way to enjoy its piquant taste. Indian markets selling fresh turmeric may also have a bin of mango ginger nearby, called am haldi.
