There are many types of yeast extract available under different brand names, Marmite, Yeastvite, Savorex, Vecon, to name just a few. All are high in salt. Vegetarian cooking in the past has been destroyed by the use of these brown pastes, as they have such a harsh and pervasive flavour. If you happen to like the taste, use yeast extracts as a spread on toast or sandwiches, but avoid cooking with them.
