The best bread crumbs are those you make yourself from stale bread. You may also lightly toast sliced bread and then grate it. It is perfectly acceptable to buy commercially prepared bread crumbs, of course; however, you should purchase only plain bread crumbs. If you want additional flavorings (herbs or grated cheese), add fresh ingredients as you prepare your dish.
