Refers to a family of long, hollow noodles of varying sizes and thicknesses. Some, such as penne, are cut diagonally at their ends. Maccheroni may be either straight or elbow-shaped, ribbed or smooth, large or small. Maccheroncini are small maccheroni. The Italian latino maccheronico roughly translates as “pig Latin.”
