The Pennsylfaanisch term Erdebbel (“AYRD-ebbel”), meaning “ground apple,” is not to be confused with Pennsylfaanisch Grumbiere (ground pear), the term for potato. The roots of the Jerusalem artichoke were commonly pickled for winter salads.
