This is also called Schwowweriewwe, usually translated as “Swabian turnip,” but which in common usage means “cockroach turnip.” Introduced into German cookery via contact with Celto-Romans, this is one of the oldest root vegetables in the Pennsylvania Dutch culinary repertory.
