When I see blackberries and raspberries I know there isn’t long left of summer. You can find them in most hedgerows. I freeze them and use in smoothies and jams, add them to porridge or mix them into cakes.
Both berries are said to be connected to the heart. Raspberries are said to be a sign of fertility. The leaves when used for tea can help to strengthen and tone the uterus and prepare the body for labour, and this magical leaf eases PMS pains, too.
Blackberries are full of vitamin C. Every time I pick them I remember my grandmother’s words: “Our hunter-gatherer ancestors used to do this thousands of years ago. Brambles have deep roots and picking blackberries is an invitation to connect to your own roots.” They are one of the strongest plants of this land. You know they are ripe when they pop in your mouth with juicyiness.
