Born in West Virginia at the end of the nineteenth century, this is now one of the most popular apples in many countries. Its distinctive elongated shape ends in five small points. The flavor and texture can vary with the climate where the apples are grown. Golden Delicious apples have a pale green to yellow skin and are excellent for eating out of hand, but they are also great for baking because they keep retain their shape well when cooked. For this reason, I specify Delicious in my recipe for Tarte Tatin. Season: Early fall, but available year round.
