A fatty acid that is composed of hydrogen-saturated carbon single bonds. This type of fatty acid increases the amount of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in the blood. Generally, saturated fats come from animal meat, such as beef, pork, and lamb (fish is the exception), and from dairy fats. They hold their shape at room temperature in a solid form. The most common saturated fats are butter, coconut oil, lard, palm oil, suet, and hydrogenated vegetable oil.
