The juice of this leafy, aromatic plant, Marrubium vulgare (a member of the mint family), is used in cooking to produce horehound candy, a brittle confection that is shaped into balls, drops, or squares; it has a mildly bitter aftertaste. Horehound extract is also used to make lozenges, cough syrups, and cordials, and has been used to make a country wine. Also spelled hoarhound.
