A thin wafer most commonly known as that given during Communion in the Catholic Church. The word comes from the Latin oblate, meaning “flattened or depressed.” Oblaten wafers are used to line pans in making candy such nougat or sweets such as panforte. The thin, paper-like wafer is completely edible. Rice paper is often used as a substitute.
