Pecans (as well as walnuts) are indigenous to North America, and both are a type of hickory nut. Pecans are generally purchased already shelled, in halves or pieces. They are more expensive than most other varieties of nuts and are especially suitable for decorative purposes. Pecans are used in some candies and breakfast pastries and, of course, the American favorite, pecan pie.
