Pomelo; Pommelo; Pummelo

This citrus fruit, which grows abundantly in Malaysia, is an ancestor of the grapefruit. It has a similar soft, thick rind, yellowish to pink in color. The flesh also varies from a light yellow to pink. The size of this largest of the citrus fruits can range from approximately that of a honeydew melon to as heavy as 25 pounds (11 kg 375 g). This fruit is also called shaddock in reference to the English sea captain who brought the seed to the West Indies. It is also known as Chinese grapefruit and jeruk bali; the French name for pomelo is chadec. The fruit should be heavy, free of blemishes, and slightly fragrant.
