Plain salt with iodine added. Iodine was initially introduced as an additive to salt in the American Midwest to help curb and eliminate goiter, a thyroid affliction caused by iodine deficiency. It was found that iodine easily bonds with sodium molecules and could easily and delicately be administered to the general public in minimal amounts. With this addition, however, the salt clouds clear water. The iodine also leaves a slight aftertaste. The salt taste of iodine salt is detected on the front and the sides of the tongue.
