Strawberries are one of the most popular fruits. The vines grow wild in many areas, but the berry grown commercially today is the result of much experimentation and cross-breeding. Strawberries are delicious served plain or with just a simple topping of cream and sugar. They are used in tarts, fruit salads, cakes, mousses, and strawberry shortcake. Fresh strawberries are available all year, although their flavor is at its peak in the summer. Frozen strawberries can be used in sauces and ice creams. Store or freeze strawberries as instructed for blackberries.
