Silk screens are used to create incredibly detailed images on thin sheets of sponge cake. These are most often cut into strips and used to decorate the sides of cakes or pastries. Alternatively, silk screens can be used to print a design on thin sheets of rolled marzipan, in which case the decorated marzipan is usually placed on the top of a cake. Silk screens come in many patterns; some are abstract, such as marbled or swirled designs, while others depict musical notes, fruits, or flowers, and there are even some that portray hobbies such as boating, golfing, and fishing. Custom-made patterns with a business name or logo may also be specially ordered.
