The large, roundish fruit of a tropical tree. A thick greenish rind covers the sweet, starchy flesh which is reminiscent in flavor and texture of a sweet potato. The panapén is not edible raw. Boiled breadfruit is served as a substitute for potato. Fried green breadfruit slices are served as tostones to accompany drinks or with meats, poultry or fish as a vegetable.
