A loose, liquidy mixture or a mixture made by whisking together a liquid and cornstarch to dissolve the cornstarch and thicken something like pastry cream. Make a slurry, instead of dumping the powdered cornstarch directly into the pastry cream, to avoid lumps in the finished product (this is also true for Thanksgiving gravy).
