American rices The United States is an important rice producer and the largest rice exporter in the world. Rice is no longer grown in Georgia and South Carolina, the birthplace of the American rice industry. The major rice-producing states are now Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Texas. The United States produces long-grain, medium-grain, and short-grain rices for use either whole or as an ingredient in processed foods. Many varieties of rice originally grown in other parts of the world are now being successfully grown here, including Japanese rice, basmati and Thai jasmine, Mediterranean rice, and several sticky rices.
