organic rice Organically grown rices, like other agricultural products marked “organic, ” have been grown with no chemical pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Farmers rely instead on natural predators and crop rotation to keep down pests and maintain productivity, and on natural fertilizers such as mulch and green manure to maintain soil fertility. Different countries define “organic” (biologico in Italian, biologique in French) differently. Organically grown rices are available at natural foods stores and in some supermarkets. When buying unmilled rice in particular, we try to use only organic rice, since we are told that chemical residues may remain in the bran of an unmilled rice.
