Valerian, a small plant with pinkish or white flowers that grows throughout Europe and Asia, is known as “all heal” in English for the sedative qualities of its root. In China and Iran a small amount of the root—sold in health food stores and Persian groceries—is boiled with borage, dried lime and sugar to make a nightcap.
