Oxford Companion to Sugar and Sweets

By Darra Goldstein

Published 2015

  • About
As raw material, sweets have proven irresistible to lyricists. Sweet things can stand metaphorically for so many larger ideas, including love, sex, and longing. They can also be used as pet names, compliments, condescension, and terms of endearment, charging an inert phrase with nostalgia or imbuing familiar words with new meaning. Musicians have cast the words β€œsugar” and β€œsweet” and seemingly every dessert, juice, and candy in unexpected ways, creating a unique catalog of songs both meaningful and memorable, if sometimes more catchy than profound.
