Fondant can be piped directly on top of a cake or pastry in the same way as the fondant ornaments above, if you have the skill to pipe a design freehand. Even if you are not a great artist (and most of us are not), you can use the following tracing method to create almost any design you like on a sheet of marzipan, which can then be placed on top of a cake.
