These may be the traditional balance scales, uncomplicated and precise but space-consuming; spring-balance scales, more suited to lighter loads but not good at weighing less than 25g (1oz); or beam scales, which are very accurate but again can be space-consuming. Be sure the scales show both metric and imperial calibrations.
