Used primarily for cooking boiled and steamed puddings, these distinctive thick basins with sloping sides are made from earthenware or glazed porcelain. They must have a sturdy, flat base and a lip under the rim for securing a tied-on cover. A basin is also useful as a mixing bowl, as a top of a double boiler, as a cold pudding mould and so on. I find that pudding basins have so many uses that I never seem to have enough of them.
