The east Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha provide some of the most stunning contrasts in the entire sub-continent. Here, as well as the Ganges plains, you will find the eastern stretch of the Himalayas, which includes Darjeeling with its rolling tea plantations, together with Sikkim and Bhutan with lakes and rivers full of fish.
West Bengal is rich in natural resources such as jute, tea, coal and iron, and has a diverse cultural heritage. Rice crops flourish in eastern India, with approximately 30 per cent of the country’s total output being produced in this region. Fish is abundantly available in the Bay of Bengal, and is put to fabulous use in the local dishes.
