  • About
Initially, in India, rice production was mainly confined to monsoon-fed areas or delta areas, where conditions were best suited to growing it. With modern farming methods, however, rice can be grown all over India.
Rice is considered sacred in India and is required for every religious ritual. A symbol of wealth, it is thrown at a newly-wed couple in much the same way that confetti is strewn in the West, wishing them great riches in their married life. In addition, before a new bride enters her husband’s home, a bowl of rice is placed at the door. The bride has to gently kick it so that the grains are scattered on the floor, symbolizing the good fortune she is bringing to her new house.
