Plain water is by far the most common drink with food. Alcohol, for those whose religion permits its consumption, is generally drunk before dinner, although in recent years drinking wine with food has become more popular, and India produces several types that complement spicy dishes.
Tea is drunk throughout the day in India, and chai wallahs are a common sight along thoroughfares and at stations and markets.
Away from mealtimes, Indians drink vast quantities of tea and coffee, often flavoured with spices such as cardamom, served with a lot of milk and often sugar, too. Thirst-quenchers made from fruits such as lime or mango, as well as the plethora of lassis made throughout the country, provide relief in the heat, and contain salt for hydration.
