The only bananas are large, floury and without any taste.
Prickly pears on a barrow are displayed to the passer-by, opened with a quick turn of the knife and eaten then and there.
On the stalls you will also see a rather sordid display of jujubes, marrow and melon seeds, sweet acorns from the forest of Mamora and grilled chickpeas. All these are nibbled throughout the day by children and idle women.
In the autumn small baskets are garnished with round bright red fruit no bigger than strawberries, on a string of doum. Children love these arbutus berries, probably more for their colour than for their insipid flavour.
