Middle Eastern country in which 62,000 ha/153,000 acres of vines were officially cultivated for table grapes and drying grapes in 2011, according to oiv figures. At one time wine may have been made here and shipped along the old Silk Road to India, and there are reports of current winemaking on the Shamali Plains north of Kabul.
