Bulgaria: The regions and quality designations

  • About

Winemaking and oenological practices have been brought into line with EU requirements, along with controlled appellations. There are just two pgi regions for Bulgaria—the Danubian Plain and Thracian Lowlands—arguably as a result of strong lobbying by large wineries used to sourcing grapes from all over the country. The border runs across the Stara Planina range from east to west. In addition, there are 52 pdos and the previous distinction between Quality Wines with Declared Geographical Origin and Quality wines with Guaranteed and Controlled Appellation of Origin is no longer made.
