PGI, abbreviation for Protected Geographical Indication, a wine category created in 2008 as part of the eu wine reform. It encompasses what used to be known as table wines with a geographical indication such as France’s vin de pays, Italy’s igt, Spain’s vino de la tierra, and Germany’s landwein. In 2012, PGI wines accounted for roughly 20% of total EU wine production. The equivalent abbreviation in many other countries, including France, Spain, Italy, and Portugal, is igp, although the speed with which the reformed terminology has been adopted varies by country.
