  • About

Cloudy Bay, seminal winery in the Marlborough region of new zealand, the brainchild of David Hohnen of Cape Mentelle in western australia. Its debut release of a moodily labelled varietal Sauvignon Blanc in 1985 on export markets created a reputation for Marlborough Sauvignon and a cult following for Cloudy Bay almost overnight, even though initially the grapes were bought in and the wine made under contract at another winery. The enterprise, based in its own premises, became a distant offshoot of the veuve clicquot, and hence lvmh, empire in 1990. It also produces Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and a sparkling wine Pelorus.
