French and eu term for blending. It means literally ‘cutting’ and retains a slightly pejorative overtone, tending to be reserved for wine blending at its least glamorous while the word assemblage is more commonly used for blending different lots of a fine wine. EU regulations prohibit the coupage of all sorts of different wines, including EU with non-EU wines, wine without geographical indication with pdo and pgi wines, and different members of these inelegantly named categories of wine.
