Czech Republic, better known for its beer, officially split from slovakia, the eastern part of what was Czechoslovakia, in 1993. It took less than a third of the productive vineyard area, just over 40% of wine production, and around two-thirds of the wine consumption of the original Czechoslovakia. The republic grew about 18,000 ha/44,480 acres of vines in 2014. In preparation for eu membership, in 1995 the Czech Republic passed wine laws modelled on the german wine law, amending them in 2000 and 2004. In response to the eu reforms of 2008, the new terms CHZO (pgi) and CHOP (pdo) have been introduced.
