doctors of medicine through the ages have displayed an uncommon affection for wine, and not just because of wine’s uses as a medicine and beneficial effects on health. Doctors have long been enthusiastic wine consumers (see Alexander henderson, for example), collectors, and, more recently, producers. There are numerous examples of vineyard owners who combine viticulture with practising medicine. Docteur Peste’s slice of the corton vineyard is sold each year in the hospices de beaune auction, itself a medical charity, for example. The mosel in Germany has an example of what might be called double-doctoring, in that the producer Dr Thanisch owns a portion of the world-famous Doctor, or Doktor, vineyard of Bernkastel.
