Échezeaux is perhaps fortunate to be rated grand cru in its entirety (37.6 ha/92.9 acres), as many of its wines are relatively light. The vineyard is made up of 11 lieux-dits ranging from Les Treux, which has a deep clay soil with indifferent drainage, to Les Échezeaux du Dessus, where the soil is shallower and chalkier and the wine correspondingly finer. It is not the equal, however, of neighbouring Grands Échezeaux (9 ha), which also abuts clos de vougeot.
