Fronton, red and rosé aoc of 1,353 ha/3,342 acres in 2012 of vineyards just north of Toulouse in south west france. It is distinguished by its local red grape variety the négrette, which must constitute at least 50% with Syrah being the most important of the many other permitted south western varieties. The character of the wines can vary considerably according to the exact terroir and encépagement. Soils on the gravelly terraces of the Tarn are particularly poor. The co-operative is an important producer. Fronton has been producing wine since before the time of charlemagne and in the 12th century the vineyard was already associated with ‘négret’. Today the great majority of it is drunk in Toulouse.
