Kosovo, territory south of serbia that unilaterally declared its independence in 2008, but whose status is still in dispute, especially with its northern neighbour. Recently recognized by the eu as a potential candidate country for membership, it has a predominantly ethnic albanian population. Conditions for grape growing are good thanks to more than 200 sunny days each year, adequate summer rainfall, and vineyards at elevations of 300 to 400 metres (985–1,310 ft) surrounded by spectacular mountains.
