Ondenc was once an important vine variety in gaillac and all over south west france but has fallen from favour because it yields poorly and is prone to rot. During the 19th century it must have been taken to Australia, where it was identified, called Irvine’s White at Great Western in Victoria, by visiting French ampelographer Paul Truel in 1976. Since then it has all but disappeared from Australian vineyards too.
