Seibel, common name for many of the french hybrid vine varieties bred by Albert Seibel of the Ardèche in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, most of them identified by number and many of them given a more colloquially appealing name. Seibel 5455 is more often called plantet, for example, while Seibel 4986 is Rayon d’Or and Seibel 9549 is de chaunac. The variety once known simply as Seibel in France is Seibel 7053, which is known as chancellor in New York state. Small quantities of various Seibels such as vignoles are planted in some cooler wine regions around the world.
