Selektion, term without legal status or specific parameters but often used by growers in austria to signify a wine with high quality pretensions or in some way unusual. The term is used, for example, by some growers in the wachau to designate wines that fail to qualify for the category smaragd because they have too high a level of residual sugar; and by certain growers in styria to highlight single-vineyard bottlings as opposed to lighter klassik bottlings. Not to be confused with selection, a specific category of German wine.
