Vranac, very promising indigenous Balkan red grape variety grown in southern croatia, Herzegovina (see bosnia), kosovo, montenegro, the republic of macedonia (where it is known as Vranec), and serbia. The wines produced are deeply coloured and can be rich in extract, responding unusually well to oak ageing. There is an element of refreshing bitterness on the finish of these wines. dna profiling at Zagreb in 2001 suggested a parent–offspring relationship with tribidrag, better known in California as zinfandel.
